We abide because something of God has first taken up residence in us.
ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν ὑμῖν μένει
ho logos tou theou … menei
You are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
The first thing said to abide is the word. An indwelling word is the source of strength and the means of victory.
ἐν ὑμῖν μενέτω … ἐὰν … μείνῃ … καὶ ὑμεῖς … μενεῖτε
menetō … meinē … meneite
Let what you heard abide in you. If it abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.
The clearest place to see the point of this chart: three different forms of one verb in a single verse — an imperative, a subjunctive, then a future. The chain is explicit — the word abiding in you secures your abiding in God.
τὸ χρῖσμα … μένει ἐν ὑμῖν … μένετε ἐν αὐτῷ

The anointing you received from Him abides in you … so abide in Him.
The anointing (χρῖσμα — the Spirit, pictured as oil) is the resident teacher. Because He abides, the response is: remain. Text note: the second verb is a known variant — see the notes below.
σπέρμα αὐτοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ μένει
sperma autou … menei
His seed abides in him, and he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.
The new birth plants a permanent seed (σπέρμα) that remains and reshapes desire. The abiding seed is the root of the changed life in stage V.
