Does the Greek word change? — No.
Every "abide / remain / continue / dwell" in 1 John is the identical Greek verb, μένω. What you see shifting from verse to verse is not the word but its grammar — its tense, mood, and ending. The stem μεν- (highlighted below) survives every change. And notice: the form is overwhelmingly present tense, which is the point — abiding is continuous, an ongoing remaining, never a one-off act.
John does not list these as a chain — he circles back and deepens. But laid in order, his statements move from the claim to abide, through the means and the marks, to the goal. Each node below gathers the verses that carry that step.
Abiding is invisible; the walk that proves it is not.
ὁ λέγων ἐν αὐτῷ μένειν ὀφείλει … περιπατεῖν
ho legōn en autō menein
Whoever says he abides in Him is himself bound to walk just as that One walked.
The opening test. A claim to abide must be cashed out in conduct — a life that retraces the steps of Jesus. The word is invisible; the walk is the evidence.
Where you abide shows in how you treat your brother.
ὁ ἀγαπῶν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ φωτὶ μένει
en tō phōti menei
The one who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.
Love is the very atmosphere of the abiding life. Set against 2:9–11, where the brother-hater walks in darkness — same realm of imagery, opposite outcome.
We abide because something of God has first taken up residence in us.
ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν ὑμῖν μένει
ho logos tou theou … menei
You are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
The first thing said to abide is the word. An indwelling word is the source of strength and the means of victory.
ἐν ὑμῖν μενέτω … ἐὰν … μείνῃ … καὶ ὑμεῖς … μενεῖτε
menetō … meinē … meneite
Let what you heard abide in you. If it abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.
The clearest place to see the point of this chart: three different forms of one verb in a single verse — an imperative, a subjunctive, then a future. The chain is explicit — the word abiding in you secures your abiding in God.
τὸ χρῖσμα … μένει ἐν ὑμῖν … μένετε ἐν αὐτῷ
to chrisma … menei … menete
The anointing you received from Him abides in you … so abide in Him.
The anointing (χρῖσμα — the Spirit, pictured as oil) is the resident teacher. Because He abides, the response is: remain. Text note: the second verb is a known variant — see the notes below.
σπέρμα αὐτοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ μένει
sperma autou … menei
His seed abides in him, and he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.
The new birth plants a permanent seed (σπέρμα) that remains and reshapes desire. The abiding seed is the root of the changed life in stage V.
Permanence is built into the word itself — to abide is to remain.
ὁ … ποιῶν τὸ θέλημα τοῦ θεοῦ μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα
menei eis ton aiōna
The world is passing away … but the one who does the will of God abides forever.
Abiding is set directly against a vanishing world. The same verb that means "stay" now means "endure to eternity."
μεμενήκεισαν ἂν μεθ' ἡμῶν
memenēkeisan an meth' hēmōn
They went out from us … for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us.
The single pluperfect in the set — the heaviest grammatical form of the verb. Continuance is the proof of genuineness: those who do not remain were never truly of the body.
A broken pattern of sin, active love, kept commands, true confession.
πᾶς ὁ ἐν αὐτῷ μένων οὐχ ἁμαρτάνει
pas ho … menōn ouch hamartanei
No one who abides in Him keeps on sinning.
Read the present tense carefully. This is not sinless perfection — 1:8 already says claiming no sin is self-deception. The present "does not sin" means the abider does not practice sin, does not live in it. Abiding breaks sin's reign, not its every appearance.
πῶς ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ θεοῦ μένει ἐν αὐτῷ;
pōs hē agapē tou theou menei
Whoever shuts up his heart against a brother in need — how does the love of God abide in him?
Abiding love is tested by the wallet and the open door, not by feeling. Withheld compassion is evidence that the love of God is not remaining there.
ὁ τηρῶν τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ μένει
ho tērōn … en autō menei
The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in them.
Obedience and abiding are inseparable — and here John first names the inner witness: the Spirit He gave us. This is also the hinge into mutual abiding (stage VI).
ὁ θεὸς ἐν αὐτῷ μένει καὶ αὐτὸς ἐν τῷ θεῷ
ho theos en autō menei
Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God — God abides in him, and he in God.
The doctrinal mark. Right confession of the Son is not a detail but a condition of the indwelling.
The same verb now runs both directions — and love is the element it lives in.
ὁ θεὸς ἐν ἡμῖν μένει
ho theos en hēmin menei
No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and His love is brought to completion in us.
The invisible God is made visible by effect — through the abiding that produces love among His people.
ἐν αὐτῷ μένομεν καὶ αὐτὸς ἐν ἡμῖν
en autō menomen
By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us: He has given us of His Spirit.
The only first-person-plural form in the set — "we abide." Mutual indwelling, certified by the gift of the Spirit.
ὁ μένων ἐν τῇ ἀγάπῃ ἐν τῷ θεῷ μένει
ho menōn en tē agapē … menei
God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.
The summit. Love is named as the very element — "in love" — within which the mutual abiding happens. Two forms of μένω in one breath.
All of it aims here — boldness, not shame, when He appears.
τεκνία, μένετε ἐν αὐτῷ
teknia, menete en autō
And now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears we may have confidence and not be put to shame before Him at His coming.
The great command. Everything the letter says about abiding bends toward this: a life that can stand unashamed and unafraid when Christ appears.
John uses the very same word for the person who will not love. It is a sobering use of μένω: the one who hates does not go anywhere — he remains exactly where everyone begins apart from Christ.
ὁ μὴ ἀγαπῶν τὸν ἀδελφὸν μένει ἐν τῷ θανάτῳ
ho mē agapōn ton adelphon menei en tō thanatō
We have passed from death to life because we love … the one who does not love abides in death.
The believer has crossed over; the loveless person has simply stayed put in death. Same verb, inverted destination.
οὐκ ἔχει ζωὴν αἰώνιον ἐν αὐτῷ μένουσαν
… zōēn aiōnion … menousan
No murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
Eternal life is itself something that abides. Settled hatred is proof it never took up residence. (Note the feminine participle — it agrees with "life," ζωήν, not with the person.)
The Greek never varies, but translators render μένω with different English words to fit the flow — which can hide the unity of the theme. Roughly:
If you study from the NIV, the phrase "lives in" and "remains" are the same word you'd read as "abide" elsewhere. Tracing μένω is what re-unites them.
The second verb in 2:27 differs across manuscripts. The Majority/Received text (behind KJV & NKJV) reads the future μενεῖτε — "you will abide in Him." The critical text (behind ESV, NIV, CSB) reads μένετε, taken as an imperative — "abide in Him."
It is the only form in the set where the editions genuinely disagree. The stem and lemma are untouched; the difference is promise (future) versus command (imperative). Both readings sit comfortably with the rest of the letter, which holds promise and command together.
