"In the name of" means by His authority, as His own
To Hebrew ears, a name was the person in summary — character, reputation, authority, presence all gathered into one. To call on a name was to call on the one who bears it. So "in the name of Jesus" is not a password appended to a sentence; it is the language of representation — acting on His behalf, under His authority, in line with who He is. An ambassador speaks "in the name of" the king: not his own words, but the king's, backed by the king's full power. That is what it means to do anything in the name of Jesus.

The case · five movements
What we are given to do in His name
The Name is exalted above all others; in it we do everything, confront the demonic, heal the sick, and pray — always as those who belong to Him and bear His name worthily.
I
The Name above every name
There is no higher authority to invoke in heaven or earth.
God has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.
His name outranks every other — every power, principality, sickness, and spirit. "There is no other name under heaven … by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). When we speak in this Name, we invoke the highest authority that exists.
II
We do everything in His name
Not a ritual phrase — the whole of life lived as His representatives.
Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
"All" — every word and deed done as His representative. Where two or three gather "in My name," He is present among them (Matt 18:20). To bear His name is a whole way of living, not a phrase reserved for prayers.
III
We cast out and heal in His name
The Name is the authority by which the kingdom advances.
I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And it came out that very hour.
"In My name they will cast out demons" (Mark 16:17). "In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk" (Acts 3:6). The Name is the conferred authority by which the sick are healed and the captive freed — His authority, exercised by His own.
IV
We pray in His name
Asking as He would ask, in line with His will and character.
Whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
Praying "in His name" is not a closing formula but asking as His representative — in agreement with who He is and what He wills. It is His authority lending weight to our requests, that the Father be glorified.
V
We bear the Name worthily
To carry His name is an honor that shapes how we live and suffer.
…rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name.
To carry His name is to represent Him in everything — even in suffering. "Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity" (2 Tim 2:19). The Name we invoke in power is the Name we are called to honor in holiness.
The shadow · the name as a magic word
The Name is not an incantation
Because the Name carries such authority, there is a constant temptation to treat it as a charm — the right syllables that force a result, detached from any real relationship with the One who bears it. Scripture flatly rejects this. The Name has no power in the mouth of one who does not belong to Him.
We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches … Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?
They used the Name as a technique, with no relationship behind it — and the demon refused them. The Name is not a formula that works for anyone who pronounces it; it carries the authority of the One you actually belong to.
Did we not … in Your name cast out demons? … And then I will declare, "I never knew you."
Even striking works done "in Your name" are hollow where the Lord can say "I never knew you." The Name is inseparable from knowing Him. Relationship is the root; authority is the fruit.
The close · carry the Name well
His name, on lips that know Him
The Name of Jesus is the highest authority in existence — exalted above every power, the only name that saves, the name at which every knee will bow. We are given the staggering privilege of speaking and acting in it: to heal, to set free, to pray, to live as His ambassadors.
But the Name works through those who belong to Him, not those who merely borrow the syllables. So we draw near, we know Him, we abide — and from there we speak. John 14:13 — "whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified." Honor the Name in holiness; wield it in faith; and let everything be done, in word and deed, in the name of the Lord Jesus.
For the careful reader
Two things worth holding onto
① "In the name" = by His authority, as His representative
The phrase is the language of delegated authority, like an envoy who acts "in the name of" the one who sent him. It is not a verbal switch that activates power. To pray, heal, or command in Jesus' name is to do so on His behalf and in agreement with His will — which is why this study pairs so closely with exousia, authority.
② The name is the person
In Scripture, to love the name, fear the name, call on the name, or trust the name is to love, fear, call on, and trust the person. So invoking the Name without knowing Him is empty (Matt 7:23; Acts 19:15). The Name is never separable from intimacy with the One who bears it.
